I am an Actress

Step One, The Resume

I am not a shy gal, so I wanted to start with the resume! It's one of the founding blocks that are required at every audition. If you don't have a resume- never fear!
Anything can be put on your resume, it's completely what you consider experience. Yes, singing in the shower does count (Who can beat the acoustics!), but that's for a touch of fun.

Appropriate resume experiences include:

High school shows: it's a great way to build experience and character! In my first year I have worked on shows like Les Mis, Lucky Stiff, Miss Saigon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest... But I digress. High school shows as well as elementary shows are a great way to glean some experience and understand the rehearsal process
Choir/Church Choir: Lot's of us can sing O' Come All Ye Faithful in our sleep, but whats important is showing that you understand the human voice. It shows that you work well with others and have musical experience!
Community Theater: Another great place to gain experience with rehearsals and the dreaded Hell Well (AKA Tech Week). It shows that you have had experience going through the audition to show process. Never fear because Community theater is just that, it builds a community!
Professional Theater: This defines anything from a Regional Theater, National Tour, Broadway and Equity Houses. These are gems on a resume, the competition is fierce to get into one of these, but it is extremely rewarding and just auditioning is a stepping stone in your acting journey!

Other fun tidbits to have:
Haunted Houses: if you work/worked at one- Yes this is acting!
Improv: the ability to act and create from the top of your head
Film: Always a good thing to have if the route you choose to take leads you to the silver screen!
Lessons in singing/acting/dance/improv: All of these are practical applications of what you have learned.
Special skills: can you juggle? Balance on one leg? Whistle? All of these things help you to be able to portray characters. Even things that you don't think that are that special are very practical to have on a resume. One of my failings is that I cannot whistle a complete tune, I can hit pitches but not whistle out a jaunty tune.
Accents: Always a good thing to learn, even if they are for a language that you made up yourself! Because everything has a time and a place, I once did an entire sketch where I had to sound like a Wookie! I never thought it'd be practical but actually I had a lot of fun doing it!

Headshot, Taken by Jeff Downie Photography

If you are in the Cleveland area, I personally recommend Jeff Downie! He does amazing head shots and it didn't even feel like I was working. His team did hair and makeup for me. This is the photo that I have used for the past three years, though I

My Resume

Now I'm not scared to post my experiences and how I structure my own resume for professional and personal use. I like the template that I have and I try and keep it under one page in length, so that I can attach my Head shot to the other side.
